Chronic Kidney Disease
Understanding Chronic Kidney Disease & Emerging Regenerative Approaches
Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a long-term condition in which the kidneys gradually lose their ability to filter waste and excess fluid from the blood. Common causes include diabetes, high blood pressure and autoimmune conditions such as lupus.
Alongside established treatments that slow progression, researchers are investigating whether mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) can reduce kidney inflammation and scarring. Trials are mostly small and early-phase, and none has shown that cell therapy reverses established kidney damage.
Why Chronic Kidney Disease Treatment Matters
Chronic kidney disease affects a large proportion of adults worldwide and often progresses silently for years. As kidney function declines, it can lead to fatigue, fluid retention, heart disease and, eventually, kidney failure.
Current treatments focus on controlling blood pressure and blood sugar, protecting remaining kidney function and preparing for dialysis or transplantation when needed.
Because lost kidney tissue does not regrow, researchers are exploring whether regenerative approaches could slow damage or support the kidney's own repair processes.
Understanding Chronic Kidney Disease & Regenerative Medicine
In many forms of CKD, ongoing inflammation leads to fibrosis, the build-up of scar tissue that replaces working kidney structures. This process drives the gradual loss of kidney function.
MSCs are being studied for their anti-inflammatory and anti-fibrotic effects in diabetic kidney disease, lupus nephritis and other forms of CKD. Most studies so far have been small and focused on safety.
In kidney transplantation, the most promising research is on whether MSCs can help reduce rejection and the need for long-term immunosuppressive medication.

How Regenerative Medicine Is Being Studied for Chronic Kidney Disease
Researchers are investigating whether MSCs can change the inflammatory and scarring processes that damage kidney tissue over time.
Studies measure safety, kidney function markers such as eGFR and protein in the urine, and how these change over months to years.
01
Reducing Kidney Inflammation
MSCs release signalling molecules that are being studied for their ability to calm inflammation within the kidney.
02
Limiting Fibrosis
Researchers are examining whether cell-based approaches can slow the build-up of scar tissue that replaces working kidney structures.
03
Supporting Kidney Cells
Studies are exploring whether MSCs can help protect the kidney's filtering and tubular cells from further injury.
05
Supporting Transplant Outcomes
Transplant research is investigating whether MSCs can reduce rejection and allow lower doses of immunosuppressive medication.
04
Modulating Autoimmune Activity
In lupus nephritis, researchers are studying whether MSCs can help regulate the immune response that attacks the kidneys.
06
Building Clinical Evidence
Larger and longer trials are needed to confirm whether any effect on kidney function is meaningful and lasting.

Who May Consider Chronic Kidney Disease Treatment?
Chronic kidney disease varies widely in its cause, stage and rate of progression. Treatment decisions depend on kidney function, underlying conditions, current medication and overall health.
People who may seek specialist information about kidney disease and emerging regenerative approaches include:
People Living With Chronic Kidney Disease
Individuals with a confirmed diagnosis who want to understand current care and emerging research.
People With Diabetic Kidney Disease or Lupus Nephritis
Individuals whose kidney disease is linked to diabetes or lupus, where MSC research has been most active.
Transplant Recipients & Candidates
People interested in research on reducing transplant rejection and long-term immunosuppression.
Is Regenerative Treatment Right for You?
A specialist medical evaluation, including a review of kidney function and the underlying cause, should always come first.
